Custance’s sculptural practice explores our relationship with space and light, activated by human encounters within architectural surroundings. The California Light and Space art movement has influenced her thinking around surface and light, and post-minimalism feminism has inspired her approach to materials and form, as well as origami architectural design. Custance’s creative process is both intuitive and rational, operating between perceiving and understanding, resulting in works that engage with ideas of simplicity and complexity; of the accidental and the controlled.
